Enlightening minds, inspiring generations

Our Business Model

Fully open access (OA) publishing is practiced by Hamdulay Publishing House (HPH), which does not charge writers a price to publish open access (sometimes called a Book Processing Charge, or BPC). Since we think that author fees are an unfair and unsustainable approach to support open access, we have created a hybrid economic model that does not call for them. Since we are a non-profit publisher, we can survive if our revenue simply equals our expenses; any excess funds are reinvested in the company to allow us to publish new books.

Key Highlights

  • No Book Processing Charges (BPC) for authors
  • Non-profit publishing model
  • Surplus funds reinvested in more publications
  • Sustainable and fair approach to open access

Research & Development

The research and development (R&D) arm of HPH is in addition to our publishing arm. Since all of our research and development is grant supported, it is financially distinct from our publishing division. By creating infrastructures and tools that other presses are free to use to publish open access books, we concentrate our research and development resources on open source initiatives that support the larger OA book ecosystem.

Our goal is to assist in removing obstacles so that more presses can publish open access content without charging authors. The 'scaling small' strategy we have chosen includes this.

By supporting open source tools and infrastructure, we're not just publishing books—we're helping build a more accessible future for academic publishing.
